Support The Children
Kākoʻo I Nā Keiki was established in 2011 as a Community Initiative to assist Teachers, Families and Students with basic necessities that include school supplies, slippers and food. The project started with Kumu Kaʻea with three annual events of the Kākoʻo I Nā Keiki-Support the Keiki Project, a community initiative spearheaded by KAPA Hawaiian FM and the HIUW in the beginning years.
In total, the 2016 project allowed for the distribution of 3,000 pairs of slippers to Big Island elementary school students, a monetary amount of over $4,000. “The impact on a childʻs learning and success starts with addressing their basic necessities they need on a daily basis,” said Ka’ea Lyons, KAPA Hawaiian FM morning co-host and content brand manager. According to Lyons, schools complete a needs-based survey each year, which allows for school assistance through Title 1 funds for most pertinent needs.
Outside programs, like the Kākoʻo I Nā Keiki-Support the Keiki Project, assist in filling in the need gaps. Since establishing Hālau Kaʻeaikahelelaniʻs 501c3, KiK, Kaʻeaikahelelani Inc., Kākoʻo I Nā Keiki continues to provide basic necessities currently with multiple food distribution efforts throughout the year.
